BiographyStephen Booth was born in Burnley and brought up in Blackpool, Lancashire. After graduating from Birmingham Polytechnic, he became a newspaper and magazine journalist. A specialist rugby union reporter, he also worked as sub-editor on the Daily Express and The Guardian. Later, he wrote for local newspapers in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, becoming Regional Secretary of the British Guild of Editors.
In 1999 he entered an unpublished mystery novel, The Only Dead Thing, for the Lichfield Prize and won. His first subsequent novel to be published was Black Dog (2000), named by the London Evening Standard as one of the best six crime novels of 2000. Dancing with the Virgins (2001) followed, and was shortlisted for the 2001 Crime Writers' Association Macallan Gold Dagger for Fiction Award. These were followed by two equally popular novels - Blood on the Tongue (2002) and Blind to the Bones (2003). Further novels in the series are One Last Breath (2004); The Dead Place (2005); Scared To Live (2006); Dying To Sin (2008); and, most recently, The Kill Call (2009).
All his novels are set in the Derbyshire Peak District and feature two young detectives, DC Ben Cooper, and DS Diane Fry. In 2007, a novella, Claws, was published.
Stephen Booth became a full-time writer in 2001 and lives in Nottinghamshire.

Author statementFrom the moment I could read other people's stories, I started to write my own - with the result that I finished my first novel when I was 12 years old. It's important for me to be excited about what I do, and to be interested in the subjects I write about. Otherwise, how can I expect readers to be interested and excited? I suppose my greatest ambition is for my characters to live on after I've gone. The idea of a vicarious immortality is very appealing! And I think I'm very, very lucky to have become involved in crime fiction at a time when the genre is so vibrant and diverse. The boundaries are continually expanding, and the possibilities for crime writers seem endless.
